Today in New Zealand International Arts Festival history: The Earth From Above (2006), Te Karakia (2008), & Michael James Manaia (2012)
A few different events today - a glimpse of the huge outdoor exhibition that opened Waitangi Park in 2006, Yann-Arthus Bertrand's photo series The Earth From Above, which I'd guess might be the Festival's biggest free event ever? Certainly the biggest I saw, in my time! It always seemed to be packed, and it was quite a large area - almost a shame it didn't become a permanent exhibition there.
Second is the play Te Karakia at Downstage, in 2008 - a great show as I recall, and an interesting one for me in that I'd also seen it at a very early stage in one of the Festival Show & Tell events, possibly as much as two years earlier. I'd also photographed the poster image for Taki Rua Theatre - but because we didn't have a cast yet when we did that, we actually used the marketing manager and the director of the company in costume! (Hence, it was taken from behind...)
One of the nice things about photographing during a schools performance is that there's often a Q&A after - this time with Tony De Goldi, Jennifer Lal and Steve Gallagher, the design team from the production, and lovely people as well.
One photo from 2010 - the lighting plot for Sutra at the St James Theatre - but more on that show tomorrow...!
And lastly, Michael James Manaia from 2012 - a hard hitting dramatic script, and an amazing performance by Te Kohe Tuhaka. Hopefully a few people got to see this one!
